Governor of the Bank of Mongolia, S. Narantsogt, together with his delegation, participated in the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, held in Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand, from October 12 to 17, 2026, under the theme “Thailand’s New Horizons: Empowering People and Building Resilience.”

The 2026 Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank

At this year’s meetings, it was reported that countries around the world have continued to increase investment in advanced AI-based technologies to adapt to technological transformation. These investments have helped offset the adverse effects of global trade disruptions, supply chain bottlenecks, and heightened uncertainty stemming from tensions in the Middle East. Meanwhile, as business activity has gained momentum, key economic indicators have exceeded expectations.

Nevertheless, if technological transformation and geopolitical tensions persist for an uncertain period, several key risks could emerge over the medium to long term. These include: (1) energy disruptions, the depletion of economic resources, and a sharp decline in the value of government securities; (2) declining returns on AI-related investments; and (3) increasing losses resulting from cyberattacks. In this context, it was emphasized that countries should effectively align their policy instruments and decisions with these evolving conditions and respond flexibly by implementing the necessary measures in a timely manner.

The meetings are also addressed policy issues related to strengthening financing frameworks for climate change adaptation and tackling the economic challenges arising from population ageing.

During the meetings, the Bank of Mongolia delegation discussed expanding cooperation with international partner institutions by exchanging views at the policy level on macroeconomic conditions, monetary policy, and financial stability, and exploring new opportunities in financial markets, asset management, and sustainable finance.
